Artist statement
I’m Aussi. I currently live in Los Angeles. Confucianism and raising awareness of environmental issues are the core of my art, and it has been subtly implemented in my work from my brushstrokes, and my unique ways of structuring my paintings. I mainly use Oil and acrylic. Confucianism isn’t always about diminishing desires, I have built up my own language of art upon the confucius concept. Abundant of vivid western palettes, subtle curvatures of eastern line works are the two main characteristics in my works that project those of the ancient ideals of Chinese poets with their lyrical poetry. For the environmental issues, I target specifically on raising awareness of global warming.
I have my own ways of observing nature. Whether or not it is abstraction, or semi-realism, I have always been one hundred percent focused to devote my life in the process of completing a piece of art with the belief that it trades off life and energy to the piece. From the blood of my work flows the foundation of confucianism that has been developed over millennia in Chinese culture, which I portray with zeal and calm from my life source.
I am fascinated with our innate minds and souls. To me, they are about emotions and moments of life, which includes, crazy, anger, lost, deceit, beauty, calm, etc. Those unconsciousness translate from our soul to our exterior surface, which includes our skin, our muscles, our bones, organs, etc. I like the idea of painting on a canvas, because they translate that idea really well, that our innate powers are confined within our body, and that body frames our energy. To me, I treat colors on the canvas as our energies, whether or not it is negative or positive. Because I believe colors and shapes are some of the best mediums that could bridge one’s unconscious to another without any disguise or language barriers. Through the use of them, I’m able to communicate to others about certain emotions that people commonly experience; and the first series of my works are about that.
I grew up in Los Angeles, Vancouver, Shanghai, Taiwan and Toronto. I spent most of the years in LA and Vancouver, where I had a lot of love and access seeing and being around with corals when I was young. Therefore, knowing the possibility that they are diminishing is hard for me. I believe living in this era, it is important for everyone to contribute a part of their effort in their daily lives to maintain a healthy earth, since it's the only one we have, and we share. And my second series of works are about corals and environmental issues.
